A new cold record was set in the Norwegian capital Oslo on Saturday: minus 31.1 degrees. For the first time since records began, temperatures fell below minus 30 degrees.

The reason: “There is currently polar night in the Arctic Circle, so there is no sunlight at all,” explains Claudia Riedl, meteorologist at Geosphere Austria. If several clear nights follow each other, the air gives off more and more heat and cools down more and more.

A huge high pressure area with freezing temperatures is forming. The effect is likely to be particularly strong in Scandinavia this year. This cold also reaches Upper Austria via air currents – “although not quite as severe as further north,” says Riedl.

The result is that temperatures during the week fall to around -10 degrees at night and do not go much above zero during the day. “But the air is very dry, it will be sunny,” says the meteorologist.

On Tuesday the sky will still be overcast and there may be heavy snowfall. In the Mühlviertel and Innviertel the sunset could already be seen, in the rest of the country it only clears up at night. At the same time, temperatures drop to -13 degrees.

From Tuesday morning there will be bright sunshine and frosty temperatures – only in isolated cases will fog form. Similar conditions are likely to prevail at least until the weekend. In rare cases, according to Riedl, the thermometer could drop to -20 degrees in this country – “but these are outliers in uninhabited areas.”
