The traditional “final climb”, the Alpe Cermis, actually an alpine ski slope, is feared. But Austria’s top cross-country skier Mika Vermeulen tamed them with the world class on the last stage of the Tour de Ski. The 24-year-old Styrian was within striking distance of the podium for a long time, but in the end he finished fourth, just 27.8 seconds behind winner Jules Lapierre.
In the overall tour ranking, the ÖSV cross-country skier made it into the top ten and came tenth, the best place for an Austrian to date in the history of this unique stage competition. The overall winner was the Norwegian Harald Östberg Amundsen. “Considering the preparation I started the tour with due to my illness, I am proud of what I have achieved,” said Vermeulen.
Things didn’t go quite as planned for his teammate Teresa Stadlober. She had to be content with 13th place on the day and fell from tenth to 13th place overall. The American Jesse Diggins won.
