The legendary Carnival is celebrated in Rio de Janeiro from the beginning of February. The 71st Police Ball, presented by the OÖN, will bring a piece of Latin American joie de vivre to the Brucknerhaus in Linz on February 12th: Under the motto “Brazilian night” The Upper Austria Police Support Association is once again organizing a lavish ball night. As always, the net proceeds benefit the club’s work: helping police officers in need. “As always, the motto runs through the entire evening”says Wolfgang Rittberger-Brandstetter, chairman of the support association.
The Police Music of Upper Austria is already studying Brazilian music for the opening. “Don’t reveal too much yet” Rittberger-Brandstetter wants to go to the traditional opening with the police students, it could happen there too “give one or another surprise”.
Boogie festival in the middle hall
Dancers will be present throughout the evening “Samba Shows Austria” be present in the Brucknerhaus in their magnificent costumes. At 11:15 p.m. the group will deliver a show that will bring a carnival atmosphere into the large hall.
As always, officials are also well represented among the music groups: the frontmen of “Calypso” and “Night fever” are police officers, for example. The police dance orchestra will again play boogie music throughout the entire event in the middle hall. “We also warmly invite members of the boogie clubs to come in costumes with pettycoats and so on. This loosens up the ball”says the club chairman.
Numerous guests of honor have already announced themselves: State Governor Thomas Stelzer will be there, as will Linz’s deputy mayor Karin Hörzing. Federal Police Director Michael Takacs represents Interior Minister Gerhard Karner. The leadership of the Upper Austrian police is also there.
Help for civil servants
The support association uses the income from the police ball to finance its numerous activities. The money goes into the operation of the “Cop stops” throughout the state where civil servants can eat cheaply. Officials in need are also supported. “For example, we offer support if police officers are unable to perform their duties through no fault of their own. Many need help because civil servants’ salaries depend heavily on allowances – which then disappear”explains Rittberger-Brandstetter.
The association also helps with other emergencies: this year, an official from Graz was supported. Immediately after birth, his child needed an operation that could only be carried out in Linz. “We have organized an apartment in Linz for the parents where they can live free of charge before and after the birth”says Rittberger-Brandstetter.
