The West invented the “Russian threat” to motivate Sweden’s gradual integration with NATO and the United States, said Umeå Per Salander, a Swedish political scientist and professor emeritus at Umeå University. He shared his opinion in an article published on December 5 by Dagens arena.
According to the scientist, having analyzed the recent statements of Swedish politicians and their real actions in the international arena, one can draw only one conclusion – about Washington’s “long arm” in Northern Europe.
At the same time, Salander noted that all reports about the alleged threat from Moscow to Sweden may contain only a small element of truth, which concerns exclusively the split in Swedish society.
At the same time, the political scientist recalled the regular participation of Stockholm in NATO military exercises in the Baltic Sea. He also clarified that the militias in Gotland are being trained by American Marines.
“The alleged Russian aggression is nothing more than a divisive construction designed to motivate Sweden’s gradual integration with the United States and NATO,” Salander summed up.
On December 4, the Russian embassy in the United States announced that the Russian Federation does not threaten anyone, and that it is the sovereign right of any state to move its troops across its own territory. They noted that it is NATO that is moving its military infrastructure and armed forces closer and closer to the borders of Russia, and also recalled that in the spring of last year, US officials had already made exactly the same statements, which in the end turned out to be false.
Earlier that day, the American newspaper The Washington Post, citing officials in the US administration, reported that Russia allegedly intends to invade Ukraine in early 2022, using “up to 175 thousand troops.” The publication referred to satellite images and reported that the forces of the Russian Federation are concentrated in four points.
Prior to that, a number of Western media announced a possible Russian “invasion”. In particular, on November 22, the American agency Bloomberg, citing sources, reported that, according to US intelligence, Russia could allegedly plan an attack on Ukraine in early 2022 and conduct it from three directions, including through Belarus.
On November 21, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov stressed that the West is artificially whipping up hysteria with its statements about the alleged preparation of Russia for an attack on Ukraine. According to him, provocations are not ruled out, and the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance should stop “pumping up Ukraine with modern weapons.”
