After the fistball players from Union Haidlmair Schwingenschuh Nußbach had already narrowly missed out on an indoor European Cup medal at last year’s Champions Cup with fourth place, the Kremstal girls were only left with nothing this time. In the small final, Austria’s champion team narrowly lost to the Swiss champion SVD Diepoldsau-Schmitter 3:4 (8, 5, -6, 8, -8, -11, -7) after a clear lead.
The task in the semi-finals in Kutna Hora, Czech Republic had already been difficult: TSV Dennach, the defending champions from Germany, were waiting. Without captain Katharina Lackinger and coach Marco Salzberger, Nußbach put up a brave fight, but ultimately had no chance against the eight-time European Cup winners. Led by substitute captain Iris Mayr, the Kremstal team forced Dennach into extra time in the fifth set, but the game ended 1:4 (-5, 9, -6, -2, -11).
“We showed that we can absolutely keep up with the top European teams,” said coach Haymo Valtiner afterwards. But you shouldn’t allow yourself to have any phases of weakness against Dennach.
In the small final the next day, captain Lackinger and coach Salzberger were back in the game. And Nußbach started brilliantly against Diepoldsau. But the Swiss equalized and had more staying power in the deciding set.
“We got off to a really good start, but then the thread broke. Our game structure became less tidy. In the end, a deserved victory for the Swiss,” analyzed Salzberger. Dennach won the title for the ninth time, silver went to Germany’s champion TV Jahn Schneverdingen.
