The trend towards urn burials does not stop at the Gmunden cemetery: while there were 92 urn burials in 2019, 131 urns were buried last year. The municipality has already responded to this: The urn walls have been expanded, and due to the high demand for additional urn spaces due to the increased number of deaths, the row of urns has to be supplemented and expanded with another three urn walls earlier than expected this year. “In addition, modern urn steles were created for individual grave sites,” says city councilor Philipp Wiatschka (Neos).

In total, the municipality of Gmunden has invested a quarter of a million euros in the maintenance, renovation and expansion of the city cemetery in the last two years. This includes access via Anton-Schosser-Strasse through a modern street design of the northern access road – which, according to Wiatschka, is particularly popular with older cemetery visitors.

The hailstorm in summer 2021 caused 150,000 euros in damage. The cemetery chapel roof, the roofs of the crypts and the main house had to be repaired.
