All of a sudden, second division soccer team SV Guntamatic Ried has suddenly increased the pressure on second division league leaders GAK: Today the Innviertel team starts their winter preparations – Ante Bajic will also be there. The OÖN had already reported at the beginning of December about Rieder’s interest in possibly bringing the 28-year-old home – the move has been perfect since Friday.
The return of the prodigal son, who moved to Rapid Vienna in the summer of 2022, is a real exclamation mark in the fight for promotion to the Bundesliga. “My gut feeling tells me that the decision for Ried is the right one. I want to get back to where I was with the club.” And by that the Altheim native naturally means the upper house.
Bajic could have stayed in Austria’s highest league: In addition to Wolfsberg, Lustenau in particular, led by ex-Ried coach Andreas Heraf, was intensively involved with the offensive player. Why did he end the green-white chapter prematurely despite a well-paid contract until 2025? “I haven’t played much recently, it feels best in my situation. Even if it seems to be a step back at the moment, it could be two steps forward again in the future.”
He also takes important experiences with him from Vienna: “Positive ones, like the international games, but also negative ones, that sometimes in a career things don’t go as planned.” His quality should make the difference in the second division title race in the spring: “It’s eight points on the GAK, but we have to look at ourselves. Then things can often happen very quickly in football.” Bajic wants to get back to his old form in Ried – and his previous shirt number should bring him luck: “As far as I know, the number twelve is not taken.”
Left-back wanted
In addition to Bajic, a left-back is also expected to come in during the winter transfer period. “We want to have this personnel clarified by the training camp, in the last few days we have subordinated everything to the transfer of Ante,” explains Ried sports director Wolfgang Fiala, who has achieved a real transfer coup: a year and a half ago Bajic was still for around 350,000 Euro changed to Rapid, now the Altheimer came back without a transfer because Rapid didn’t put any obstacles in his way and terminated his contract. Four kickers will be missing from today’s opener: Oliver Steurer, Nils Seufert, Fabian Wohlmuth and Jonas Mayer are ill.
