According to estimates, around a fifth of the population in this country lives with a hearing impairment, and one in three people aged 65 and over is affected. Many people reject hearing aids. These can prevent depression and dementia. According to a new US study, the general risk of death falls by almost a quarter over a period of ten years.
A study just published in The Lancet Healthy Longevity has discovered why people should decide to use hearing aids. A team led by Janet Choi from the University of Southern California used data from 10,000 adults from the “National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey” from 1999 to 2012.
“We found that adults who regularly used hearing aids had a 24 percent lower risk of death than those who never wore one,” explains Janet Choi of the University of Southern California.
She suspects this has to do with the risk of depression and dementia. Improvements in mental health and thinking are beneficial to general health.
