The Wels Volunteer Fire Department recorded a significant increase in operations in its annual balance sheet for 2023: the emergency services were deployed 2,868 times in the previous year. Compared to 2022, this is an increase of 662 missions or around 30 percent. The number of interventions – when at least one vehicle leaves one of the four guards with flashing lights – has also increased from 1,361 to 1,621. The main reason for the increase is storms and heavy snowfall at the beginning of December.
Firefighters were able to rescue 332 people from an unfortunate or emergency situation in 2023 – 152 more than in the previous year. The reasons for this still have to be determined, fire department commander Roland Weber said in a press release.
The number of fire operations has remained almost the same at 567, but real fires have risen sharply from 142 to 189 cases. Here too, according to Weber, the cause is still unclear. However, current evaluations would suggest the careless use of cooking and heating devices and the disposal of burning cigarettes.
The time commitment of the volunteers is also impressive this year: they contributed a total of 21,882 hours of volunteer work in the emergency service alone. If the training and further education as well as the preparation and follow-up of operations are included, this results in a total effort of 48,264 hours by the firefighters for the past year.
