The musician had his nomination for “Certified Lover Boy” in the “Best Rap Album” category and for the song “Way 2 Sexy” in the “Best Rap Performance” category withdrawn, US media reported on Tuesday, citing an appeal to the Recording Academy, which hosts the Grammys.
The entries on the Recording Academy website had already been deleted on Tuesday and there were only four nominations in each category instead of the previous five. What was behind the process was not initially clear. In order to be nominated, a musician has to submit his works in advance, usually through his management. Drake’s management did not initially comment on request.
The musician had been dissatisfied with the Grammys several times in the past – due to what he saw as a lack of transparency and diversity and, above all, in connection with the lack of nominations for his Canadian rapper colleague The Weeknd. The Weeknd announced a few months ago that it would boycott the Grammys in the future.
The next Grammy gala will take place on January 31, 2022 and will be moderated by comedian Trevor Noah. The US musician Jon Batiste is a favorite in the 64th edition of the Grammys with eleven nominations. Behind him are singer Justin Bieber (“Peaches”), rapper Doja Cat (“Kiss Me More”) and singer-songwriter HER (“Fight For You”), each with eight nominations.
The pop singers Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo can raise their hopes in seven of the 86 Grammy categories. Around 13,000 members of the Recording Academy decide on the winners of the Grammys, which are among the most coveted music prizes in the world.
