At the Korneuburg regional court on Tuesday, a trial surrounding a bloody act in Strasshof (Gänserndorf district) in April 2023 ended with the final placement of a 28-year-old in a forensic-therapeutic center. The man is said to have stabbed his 60-year-old mother with a kitchen knife.

The stepfather (70) was also injured in the attack. The jury decided unanimously that the person concerned acted in a state of insanity. The scene of the knife attack on April 3rd last year was a terraced house in which the couple and the 60-year-old’s son lived together. Prosecutor Gudrun Bischof spoke on Tuesday of a “terrible and tragic incident”. The victim is said to have stabbed his mother around 30 times with a kitchen knife. The screaming woman was helped by her stepfather, who was also attacked. The 70-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries and, according to Bishop, only survived the precarious health situation thanks to the quick intervention of the police officers who were requested.

While the 60-year-old succumbed to her injuries on the spot, her partner was flown to the St. Pölten University Hospital and treated in the intensive care unit. The 28-year-old, who had no criminal record, was also seriously injured in a suicide attempt. When questioned, the person concerned made a comprehensive confession. He cited differences of opinion and different worldviews as a motive.

Corona as a controversial topic

According to Bischof, the Lower Austrian felt increasingly excluded from the family, not least because of his view on the corona vaccination. He often holed up in front of the PC and thought about aliens, Freemasonry and the end of the world, about which the 28-year-old also wrote a manuscript. Before the crime, these views are said to have intensified, which led to discussions with the mother several times – including immediately before the knife attack, which the Lower Austrian says he can no longer remember. “Then I just saw my mother and ran away,” the man said.

The psychiatric expert Peter Hofmann confirmed that the person concerned had a serious mental illness in the sense of a chronic drug psychosis. The 28-year-old was therefore not sane at the time of the crime. The Lower Austrian admitted in the jury trial that he had been consuming cannabis for around eight years, most recently on a daily basis.

According to Hofmann’s assessment, there is a risk that the person concerned could commit criminal acts again in the foreseeable future with very serious consequences. Defense attorney Astrid Wagner spoke of “really unbelievable events” and said it was “tragic what happened here.” There is no doubt about what happened on April 3, 2023: “The course of events is clear.” In her closing speech, prosecutor Bischof stated that the treatment of the 28-year-old would be “a lengthy process”. If the person concerned was sane, he would have been prosecuted for murder and attempted murder. The lay judges unanimously answered the relevant main questions in the affirmative.
