The chairman of the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia, Alexander Bastrykin, instructed the investigators of the central office to conduct a pre-investigation check after reports of the murder of two Russian women who disappeared in the Republic of Cyprus in November. This was reported on December 7 on the website of the RF IC.
On November 17, Russian tourists, 43-year-old Hayat Al-Raisi and 33-year-old Maria Gazibagandova, were reported missing in Larnaca. The women lived in Cyprus on a tourist visa.
As specified in the ICR, as part of the check, investigators will have to thoroughly understand the circumstances of the death of Russian women, including with the involvement of mechanisms of international cooperation in the field of criminal proceedings. Based on the results of the investigation, if there are sufficient grounds on the fact of the incident, a decision will be made to initiate a criminal case.
Earlier, on December 6, the Cyprus Mail reported on the arrest of a suspect in the murder of two Russian women in Cyprus. It was clarified that a 32-year-old native of Syria, suspected of deliberately killing tourists from the Russian Federation, whose bodies were found buried in the courtyard of a holiday home in the mountains, was arrested in Limassol, Cyprus for eight days.
On December 5, the Izvestia correspondent showed the place where the bodies of two Russian women killed in Cyprus were found. According to the journalist, the bodies of the Russian women were found in a pit in a remote village, where about 300 people live.
In turn, the Russian embassy in the Republic of Cyprus said that the missing tourists were found dead, three people were detained, one of whom confessed to the murder. According to a spokesman for the embassy, one of the killed women flew to Cyprus in early summer, and the other about a month and a half ago. Both tourists rented an apartment in Larnaca.
