Violence in Ecuador: attack on a television channel and state of emergency

The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, signed today a decree that declares the country in a state of “internal armed conflict” and orders the Armed Forces to “carry out military operations to neutralize” the actions of twenty criminal gangs, in the middle of a new wave of violence in the main cities of the country.

The president’s decision came shortly after men with rifles and grenades raided the TC Television studios, the public channel of Guayaquil, on the Ecuadorian coast, and one day after decreeing the state of siege due to the escape from prison of the head of one of the largest criminal gangs in the countryidentified with the alias Fito, to which was later added another escape by the leader of another group, as well as other acts of violence.

The executive decree reforms the current state of emergency and recognizes the existence of an internal armed conflict, thus providing for the mobilization and immediate intervention of the Armed Forces and the Police in the national territory.
