An Innviertel man’s attempt to prepare a late lunch for himself ended up in the hospital on Wednesday afternoon: the 29-year-old had put a cooking pot with oil on the electric stove around 1:30 p.m. and then left the kitchen for a few minutes – too long, as it turned out a little later: the fat caught fire in the unattended pot.

The grandmother, who also lives in the house, and her grandson became aware of the fire due to what the police described as “massive” smoke. Despite the clouds of smoke, the man from Innviertel took the burning pot from the stove and threw it onto the terrace. The reaction probably prevented him from causing major damage to the facility, but he did suffer burns of an undetermined degree to his hand and arm.
Second incident within a few days
The Markt Friedburg volunteer fire department responded with 15 emergency services and was able to quickly extinguish the fire. The injured man was treated by paramedics from the Mattighofen Red Cross and then taken to the LKH Salzburg by rescue helicopter “Christophorus 6”. The grandmother survived the fire uninjured, the police said in the evening.
The OÖNachrichten only reported on a similar incident on Tuesday: After fat in a pan ignited, a 75-year-old from Pram (Grieskirchen district) had to be taken to hospital with suspected smoke poisoning.
