The avalanche occurred in a gully filled with snowdrifts. While the 31-year-old was able to deploy the airbag backpack, his colleague was unable to do so. The Germans remained lying on the surface at the outlet of the snow slab.

One of the two started the rescue chain himself, the police said. The injured were finally rescued by the crew of a rescue helicopter and taken to the Hall hospital in Tyrol. A 27-year-old German was also on the tour. He remains unharmed.

The 32-year-old drove ahead when crossing the roughly 40-degree steep gully. Then the other two tourers followed. Suddenly around 7:30 a.m. the snow slab came off.
