The “Yellow Angels” from the four ÖAMTC bases in the Salzkammergut (Gmunden, Vöcklabruck, Bad Ischl and Mondsee) have had a busy year. The mobile roadside assistance was called out 18,110 times, plus 5,254 towings. 20,373 breakdowns were repaired directly at the bases. “If you include the testing services and consultations, we recorded 110,646 customer contacts in the Salzkammergut,” says Dieter Lepschy, chief technician at ÖAMTC Upper Austria. “That’s an increase of around eight percent compared to the previous year.”
As in previous years, around a third of all operations were due to weak, empty or defective batteries. This was followed by problems with the tires, the alternator or the starter as well as the engine or the engine management. In around five percent of cases, vehicle doors that were accidentally locked had to be opened.
By the way, the battery is also the most common cause of breakdowns in electric cars – although not the large battery for the engine, but a small battery for the on-board network. “If it’s defective, the whole car will be parked here too,” says chief technician Lepschy.
