He Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP) evaluates a system so that foreigners with transit taxes must pay them before leaving the Uruguaywhich would be in effect at the end of the summer season.
This was anticipated by the Minister of Transportation and Public Works, José Luis Faleroduring the launch of the cruise season in Punta del Estereported Cover Ok.
The MTOP has been working jointly with the Ministry of Interiorthrough the National Immigration Directorateand with the municipalities, through the Congress of Mayorsto find a solution to the problem since in the country there is no legislation that forces foreigners to cancel their fines.
“The plan is that the tourist has to comply with the obligations and sanctions that may be applied within the national territory, something that until now has not been possible, since a foreigner who commits a traffic violation in Uruguay and does not have the identification document, he can leave the country without paying the fine that corresponds to him,” Falero explained.
Last September, the government began working on legislation and the appropriate system to fine foreign vehicles through the radars installed by the MTOP.
According to what is stipulated in the work table, after the generation of the penalty feethe foreign offender could pay it at a totem before leaving the country, or the violation could arrive at his or her residence abroad and he or she could pay it through a website.
With the new fixed radar system implemented at the beginning of August by the Ministry of Transportation, the scale of fines due to speeding it had been like this:
- 5 UR (7,988 pesos) if the excess is 20 km/h.
- 8 UR (12,781 pesos) if the excess is between 21 and 30 km/h.
- 12 UR (19,171 pesos) if the excess is between 31 km and twice the permitted limit.
