The Snai prison authority said on Thursday that the number of hostages had increased by 39 since the previous day. She reported unrest in several prisons, where inmates fired on armed forces.

On Sunday, the influential gang leader José Adolfo Macías, alias “Fito”, escaped from the maximum security prison in the port city of Guayaquil. President Daniel Noboa then declared a state of emergency and a nighttime curfew on Monday. The gangs fought back and declared “war” on the state. They kidnapped police officers, detonated explosive devices and threatened arbitrary executions. At least 16 people have been killed so far in the escalation of violence.

Ecuador lies between Colombia and Peru, the world’s two largest cocaine producers, but was long considered comparatively peaceful and stable. In recent years, the country itself has become a hub for international drug trafficking. Since then, violent crime has also increased massively.

Violent riots between rival gangs also occur again and again in prisons. President Noboa was elected in the fall with a promise to curb violence in the country and regain control of prisons.
