Short U-Committees: Final reports scheduled for July 1st

The COFAG investigative committee requested by the SPÖ and FPÖ and the red-blue abuse of power investigative committee initiated by the ÖVP began their work on Thursday.

Subpoenas were submitted at the constituent meetings. Files must be submitted by February 9th, after which the review work begins. There isn’t much time left: the final reports should be available on July 1st.

The COFAG committee will examine the treatment of people who are considered to have assets of at least one billion euros and who have supported the ÖVP. The focus should be on the federal Covid financing agency and on payments to the super-rich close to the VP.

With the red-blue abuse of power audit, the People’s Party wants to examine the government participation of the SPÖ and FPÖ from 2007 to 2020, with a particular focus on possible improper use of public money. Advertisements, surveys, studies and other orders are questioned.

“We are happy that it is starting,” said Green Party member Nina Tomaselli. The COFAG committee will become a “Benko investigative committee”; Rene Benko was on the border of legality.

VP parliamentary group leader Andreas Hanger is “completely calm” about the COFAG committee. He objects to the fact that individual companies were given preference. The committee on the red-blue abuse of power was “deliberately defined very broadly”.

From Blümel to Doskozil

According to Hanger, the central issues concern the FPÖ, “which is essentially a corrupt party.” Herbert Kickl’s time as Interior Minister should also be examined.

The respondents on both committees are prominent. To be loaded e.g. B. Former Finance Minister Gernot Blümel, his successor Magnus Brunner, Chancellor Karl Nehammer (all VP), the ex-Chancellors Alfred Gusenbauer, Christian Kern and Werner Faymann, the Second President of the National Council Doris Bures and State Governor Hans Peter Doskozil (all SP).
