Russian President Vladimir Putin at a meeting with American leader Joe Biden said that the sanctions have no positive effect on the United States itself. Aide to the President of the Russian Federation Yuri Ushakov spoke about this on December 7 at a briefing with journalists.
“The president [России] talked about what the Russian side needs, that sanctions are not new, [они] they have been adopted for a long time, but unfortunately they do not give any positive effect either for the United States or for Russia, ”Ushakov conveyed the words of the Russian leader.
Putin’s aide remarked that the US president had warned of new sanctions and said there was a threat to Russia’s “economy, finance and politics”.
At the same time, experts interviewed by Izvestia said that the talks between the presidents of the two countries, despite the absence of specific agreements, are likely to reduce tensions between Russia and the West associated with the Ukrainian crisis.
As Dmitry Suslov, Deputy Director of the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies at the Higher School of Economics, explained to Izvestia, the current conversation between the two leaders was extremely important, since recently there has been a significant escalation of tension.
He recalled that “Russia has very clearly indicated its extreme dissatisfaction with the state of affairs, primarily with the policy of Ukraine and the West towards Kiev.” And the West, in turn, showed its unwillingness to make concessions and declared “a reinforced concrete position of imposing catastrophic sanctions if Russia uses force against Ukraine.”
The online summit of Putin and Biden took place on December 7 and lasted two hours.
Later, the Kremlin said that the Russia-US summit was frank and businesslike. It was clarified that the leaders discussed the implementation of the results of the Russian-American summit held in Geneva in June, and also agreed to continue the dialogue between the countries.
In addition, Joe Biden emphasized the allegedly threatening nature of the movements of Russian troops near the Ukrainian borders and outlined sanctions measures that the United States and its allies would be ready to apply in the event of a further escalation of the situation.
In response, Vladimir Putin stressed that there is no need to shift the responsibility onto the shoulders of Russia, since it is NATO that is making dangerous attempts to conquer Ukrainian territory and is building up its military potential at our borders.
