A young employee opened the suspicious-looking package with air holes and was shocked by the contents. Reptile expert Helga Happ was called in and is now trying to nurture the severely hypothermic animal.
On the package that was supposed to go from Carinthia to Germany, the contents were labeled as “glass figures,” said Happ. When she arrived at the distribution center early in the evening, she asked employees to keep their distance and pay attention. “As a rule, venomous snakes are sent illegally in packages.” She then looked carefully and discovered the young boa constrictor. “The transport was very bad for the snake, it was totally hypothermic. I grabbed it in the crook of my armpit, it was as cold as an icicle.” According to Happ, the animal would not have survived the transport. There was a heat pack in the package, but it was already cold.

“I slowly warmed up the snake”
The boa is now in the Klagenfurt reptile zoo, which Happ runs. “I took the snake to the zoo and slowly warmed it up.” The reptile lay under the heat lamp in its new home for a long time, then on Friday morning it retreated into a hiding place. “We’ll try feeding in the next day or two.” Happ strongly recommends using wildlife transport services that are specifically offered for transporting wild animals. In this specific case, Happ informed the animal protection ombudsman and everything else rested with the responsible authorities.
