Mayor Anna Maria Cisint wants to introduce a decency and cleanliness ordinance that will provide for penalties of 30 to 200 euros for the offense.
The regulation follows the regulation introduced last year against cigarette butts thrown onto the street. In 2023, city police issued 16 fines to people who dumped their cigarettes on the sidewalk.

The mayor from the ranks of the right-wing ruling party Lega has been making headlines again and again recently. 8,000 Muslims from various Italian regions gathered in Monfalcone shortly before Christmas to protest against the mayor’s decision to close some prayer centers. “We are Muslims and we are Italians,” emphasized the demonstrators who came from different parts of Italy. Cisint recently closed some prayer centers on the grounds that they did not meet the necessary safety standards. Fundamentalist terrorism would also be glorified in the prayer centers.
The mayor is no stranger
The mayor of Monfalcone is known for her positions against Islam. In an open letter to the Muslim community last summer, she called on them to observe “Western beach customs” and not to swim in the sea with their clothes on. She threatened to ban the burkini, a swimwear for women that covers the entire body except the face, hands and feet. There were solidarity demonstrations with Muslim women against their plans.
