Many pupils and students learned Pascal, which he designed and implemented, as a teaching language for decades. In 1984 he was awarded the Turing Award for his work on programming languages, so far the only German-speaking computer scientist in the world. This prize is considered the Nobel Prize for computer science.
“Wirth’s law” is named after Wirth. It means that the hardware can never keep up with the increasing demands of the software. Wirth also played a central role in helping computer science achieve a breakthrough in Switzerland.
