1,682 unemployed people (494 women, 1,188 men) and 241 training participants were registered as looking for work in the Schärding district on the last day of 2023. This means an increase of almost 300 people or 20 percent compared to the previous year.

In December alone there were 992 new unemployment cases at the AMS Schärding. This compares to 150 departures. The unemployment rate was 6.7 percent, the Upper Austria average was 5.7 percent.

“The majority of the sharp increase in unemployment in the winter months is seasonal or weather-related and is therefore fundamentally nothing new in the district,” says Harald Slaby, head of the Schärding employment service.

Lots of reinstatement promises

According to Slaby, many companies in the construction and construction-related industries released their employees much earlier last year than in previous years. “In this way, the generally somewhat weaker economy is likely to be particularly noticeable,” reports Schärding’s AMS boss. In addition to the many negative reports, there are also positive things to report. 800 of the people who were registered as unemployed in December have a promise of reemployment. “This means that more than half of those registered with the AMS Schärding already have a fixed ticket in their pockets to return to their workplace as soon as the construction season starts again in the next few weeks,” says Slaby.
