Emmanuel Macron made his first prank on Tuesday. To everyone’s astonishment, the French President appointed the 34-year-old former Education Minister Gabriel Attal as Prime Minister. Attal is seen as Macron’s “weapon” in the EU election campaign against the right-wing extremist Rassemblement National, which is around 10 percent ahead of the presidential party Renaissance in polls.
Macron’s second coup came on Thursday when the new government team was introduced – with a dazzling, completely unexpected star: Rachida Dati, an icon of the French right, becomes culture minister. The controversial conservative was previously mayor of the chic seventh arrondissement of Paris. What obviously didn’t count was the ongoing investigations against the 58-year-old. She is accused of corruption and passive bribery in connection with highly paid consulting services for Renault-Nissan while she was an MEP.
Observers are certain: Although Macron clearly wanted to position himself in the center, he has now moved massively to the right with his new government. At the same time, he tries to signal stability by not changing important key positions. He has clearly broken his promise of equalization between women and men.
