Biden promised Putin to discuss with NATO the topic of non-advancement of the alliance to the east

US leader Joe Biden, in response to Russia’s concern over NATO’s eastward movement, promised Russian leader Vladimir Putin to discuss this topic with his alliance colleagues. Aide to the President of Russia Yuri Ushakov spoke about this following the results of negotiations between the two leaders, which took place on December 7 in an online format.

“He [Байден] said that all these concerns, expressed by the Russian side, will be discussed among its allies, ”said the Kremlin spokesman.

Commenting on the concern of the West over Russian troops on the border with Ukraine, Ushakov stressed that the Russian military is on its territory and does not threaten anyone.

In addition, Ushakov, in his interpretation, conveyed to reporters the words that Putin said to Biden, explaining the difference between US concerns about Russian troops and Russia’s concern about NATO’s approach to its borders.

“Putin said: you Americans are worried about our battalions on Russian territory, thousands of kilometers from the United States. And we are really worried about our security, the security of Russia in a global sense, on a global scale, ”the administration representative conveyed the words of the Russian leader, who summed up the discussion of the issue of NATO movements.

A Kremlin spokesman noted that Moscow’s concerns about NATO’s eastward expansion and issues related to the provision of necessary security guarantees will be discussed in the strategic stability group.

The leaders’ conversation lasted two hours. The Kremlin called the talks between Putin and Biden frank and businesslike.

On the same day, American political scientist Ariel Cohen noted that the West did not promise Russia not to expand NATO to the east. According to him, there have never been such papers.

On December 6, CSTO Deputy Secretary General Valery Semerikov said that the provocative orientation of the NATO exercises in the East European direction is beyond doubt, but these actions are not noticed by international organizations.

At the same time, on November 30, Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Witfeldt said that the new government of the country opposes the movement of NATO allies near the borders of Russia and plans to limit them. At the same time, according to her, the presence of the US military in the area of the Norwegian-Russian border is no more than in other periods of the “post-war era.”
