Major fire in an abandoned inn in Salzburg: 4 homeless people injured

Four people were slightly injured in the fire at a former inn in Salzburg on Saturday night. They were taken by the rescue team to the Salzburg State Hospital with suspected smoke poisoning, reported Red Cross Salzburg spokeswoman Roberta Thanner to the APA. A passer-by noticed the fire around 3 a.m. in the building, which had been empty for some time and contained an inn with an adjoining apartment.

Flames were already shooting out of the roof

When the emergency services arrived, the flames were already coming out of the roof structure: “We rescued 4 people from the smoke-filled area and handed them over to the rescue with suspected smoke poisoning,” Stefan Jakolitsch from the city of Salzburg’s professional fire department told the APA. The people were sleeping and did not notice the fire. “That could have ended badly.” Those rescued are said to be homeless people who had sought shelter in the former inn and furnished it accordingly.

According to the fire department, around 40 square meters of roof structure were affected by the fire. The emergency services quickly brought the fire under control by fighting it from outside and inside. Around 7:30 a.m. the “fire was out” was announced.

The cause of the fire is still unclear

Fire investigators were looking for the cause of the fire in the powerless building on Saturday morning. Once the police have completed the investigation, the area affected by the fire will be cleared out with a crane in order to combat possible hidden embers. Eberhard-Fugger-Straße was closed for the duration of the extinguishing work.
