“The information we currently have is 18 dead,” said the official. Colombia’s Vice President Francia Márquez also spoke on X (formerly Twitter) of around 30 injuries. The mayor of Carmen de Atrato, Jaime Herrera, told the Caracol Televisión television station that some people were very seriously injured. Some people are still buried.
Photos published on online platforms showed cars destroyed by masses of earth. It had recently rained heavily in the rainforest region in the west of the South American country.
