Colombia: At least 18 dead in landslide

A representative of the Chocó department told AFP on Friday that several landslides had blocked a road between the cities of Medellín and Quibdó. Numerous people then got out of their vehicles and sought shelter in a house near the community of Carmen de Atrato. But this was then buried by another landslide.

“The information we currently have is 18 dead,” said the official. Colombia’s Vice President Francia Márquez also spoke on X (formerly Twitter) of around 30 injuries. The mayor of Carmen de Atrato, Jaime Herrera, told the Caracol Televisión television station that some people were very seriously injured. Some people are still buried.

Photos published on online platforms showed cars destroyed by masses of earth. It had recently rained heavily in the rainforest region in the west of the South American country.
