At 4:15 a.m., rescue workers were called to a carport fire in the Münichholz district of Steyr. When the police patrol, a policewoman and her colleague, arrived at the scene, the carport and the adjacent wooden shed were already fully ablaze. A parked Peugeot had also caught fire.

The police officers courageously intervened: They grabbed the fire extinguisher, which, according to the press office, they had in their company vehicle equipment and started extinguishing the fire. By the time the Steyr volunteer fire department arrived, the fire had already been contained somewhat.

The firefighters extinguished the fire completely and the operation was completed after two hours. This prevented the flames from spreading to the main building. But the property damage is considerable: according to the police, it is estimated to be in the five-figure range. The car was badly damaged and the carport burned down completely.

The two residents of the adjacent house, a 54-year-old and a 28-year-old, remained uninjured.

Ash as a possible cause of fire

Arson was ruled out after investigations. According to the police, the suspicion was confirmed that ashes from a fireplace stored in the shed could have caused the fire.
