The tax, which was only introduced in 2020, is aimed at advertising on the Internet (e.g. banner or search engine advertising), which is not affected by the advertising tax. It serves as an interim solution until global taxation rules for the digital economy are set at the OECD and EU levels, the Ministry of Finance announced on Sunday.
The digital tax affects companies that generate at least 25 million euros in sales from online advertising services in Austria and have a global turnover of at least 750 million euros. The tax rate is 5 percent of the assessment basis. This corresponds to the fee that an online advertising provider receives from its client, writes the ministry.
The tax is intended to ensure fairer taxation of the digital economy in Austria. But such a tax should also be enforced internationally. “We remain determined to achieve fair taxation of the digital economy at the international level,” said Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) in a press release.
