On the Traunstein near Gmunden, the search has been underway since Saturday evening for two experienced mountaineers from Pettenbach, 32 years old, and Timelkam, 26 years old. The alpinists had planned a tour through the north face of the mountain, the so-called “Nordwandkessel”.
You probably reached the base of the wall around 11:30 a.m. and started the route, which has climbing difficulties of up to the upper third degree. In winter it is considered a challenging ice tour. However, the conditions are currently extremely difficult; the fresh snow from the past few days has formed a dangerous layer of powder on the ice. Already on Saturday morning, so-called “spindrifts” (a kind of avalanche in small format) kept coming out of the wall.
When the 26-year-old’s partner still hadn’t heard from her boyfriend around 7 p.m., she filed a missing person’s report. A large-scale search operation involving mountain rescuers from Gmunden, the Alpine police and helicopters was initially unsuccessful and was called off around two in the morning. She was readmitted six hours later.
During the rescue operation on Saturday evening, a Gmunden mountain rescuer was also injured by a snow slab.
