The Gasthof Kramerwirt in Weißenkirchen im Attergau opened its Sterndl Bar a little earlier on Sunday. Because at 12.45 p.m. there was already a good reason to celebrate in the 968-resident community in the Hausruckviertel, five kilometers by car from Frankenmarkt.

Especially for one person: Josef Rauchzauner Junior (VP) was elected the youngest mayor in the country at the age of 25.

67.27 percent of the votes went to the managing director of RKL Maschinenbau GmBH, who had been in charge of official business as deputy mayor since September 1st. His challenger, Johann Kalleitner (FP), got 32.7 percent. Three percent of the votes cast were invalid; voter turnout was 72.68 percent. Rauchzauner, who went into election day with a “good feeling”, was not only happy about the clear victory: “In the last mayoral election we had a lot of invalid votes, almost twelve percent. It’s nice to see that the citizens are this time could decide for someone,” he says.

“First sort out your finances”

The election was necessary because Josef Meinhart (VP) retired in August last year after 15 years as mayor. He said he wanted to spend more time with his family and work more intensively on the farm. Because Meinhart’s resignation took place before two-thirds of the current electoral term had expired, a new election was held.

“When I look at the current trend in surveys at the federal level, I can only be very satisfied with the result,” says the 25-year-old, whose father Josef Rauchzauner Sr. is the longest-serving local councilor in Weißenkirchen.

He is now concerned with “getting the budget under control” for 2024; there is still “a lot to do.” The revenue shares have shrunk and the financial situation for many communities is therefore tense. “I’m not a big dreamer. The financing has to be in place first, then the big projects come,” says the 25-year-old.

The mayors of neighboring communities, community association president Christian Mader and state councilor Michaela Langer-Weninger also announced their presence at the election party on Sunday. Governor Thomas Stelzer congratulated in a broadcast: “As the youngest mayor of Upper Austria, Josef Rauchzauner will bring a breath of fresh air to Weißenkirchen. The intensive contact with the citizens, but also his voluntary work in the volunteer fire department and the rural youth have certainly contributed to his election success,” says Stelzer. There is only one wish left for Rauchzauner: that “his” club Red Bull Salzburg also wins a title.
