57.1 percent decided against the highly controversial land deal surrounding the construction of a new municipal office. 42.1 percent were in favor with a 35 percent voter turnout.
A result that surprised the non-party initiator of the referendum, Harald Nimmerfall: “I didn’t expect such a high voter turnout. The fact that a clear majority is against the purchase of the property should give the local council something to think about. After all, democracy is here on the test bench.”
Mayor remains cautious
As reported, the referendum was about the purchase of a property owned by FP community leader Gerald Kirchberger. This is located at a dangerous intersection and is also too far away from the town center, argued Nimmerfall when collecting signatures for the referendum. With their signature, 181 Kematners supported his initiative.
After the result was announced, SP Mayor Klaus Bachmair spoke of a mood picture and confirmation of direct democracy: “Our group has said what our opinion is. We also accept any other opinion. I would rate the result of the survey as balanced. It doesn’t swing completely in any direction.”
Before the referendum, there was a political exchange in the local council between Bachmair’s SP and the ÖVP/FPÖ majority. While the Reds spoke out in favor of renovating the old municipal office, the majority decided to purchase the Kirchberger property, which cost 443,375 euros.
In their “community courier,” the Freedom Party recently questioned the usefulness of yesterday’s referendum. The purchase of the property had been irrevocably decided and the purchase contract had long since been concluded.
The local council discusses the result
When asked, current owner Kirchberger, who is also chairman of the regional planning committee, did not want to comment on the results of the referendum: “We have a local council meeting next week. The further course of action will be decided there,” said the FP community board. The representatives will meet on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
When asked how he would now deal with the results of the referendum, SP Mayor Bachmair replied: “As mayor, I can’t decide that anyway. I can’t say how the local council will behave now. I would have to have a crystal ball for that. “
