The 33-year-old from Linz and his companion of the same age from Vienna set out on a mountain tour to the Eibenberg on Saturday. The couple had planned to spend the night on the “Eibenbergschneid”, the summit area, and were appropriately equipped for this. The path to the Schneid up to the ridge was well marked.
The man and woman actually spent the night in a snow bivouac. The conditions were rough: strong winds of up to 70 km/h were blowing at times, which ultimately led to significant snow loads.

On Sunday morning the mountain athletes set off back down into the valley. However, due to the strong wind, which had not let up in the morning hours, the footprints of their ascent in the ridge area were no longer visible, and they also missed the orientation board towards Offensee. The attempt to reach the hiking trail failed and the two ended up on steep, snow-covered grass and craggy slopes. It was no longer possible to move forward. At around 11 a.m. the couple finally called the mountain rescuers for help.

The site had to be secured with rope railings
The police helicopter “Libelle” found the two shortly before noon, but rescue with the rope was impossible due to the strong wind. Forces from the Ebensee mountain rescue service and an officer from the Gmunden Alpine Police began the climb. They reached the couple at around 3:15 p.m. The very steep site had to be secured with rope railings. The mountain rescuers were then lowered to those seeking help and the two mountain athletes were brought out of the danger area. They survived their emergency without injuries and were able to descend into the valley independently with the help of mountain rescue.

“The popular path from the Offensee to the Eibenberg is steep in the upper part even without snow and leads over a few rocky steps. These should not be underestimated with snow and ice, as the iron pins that make the ascent and descent easier there are not can be used,” warns the mountain rescue service.
