Merkel asked new chancellor Scholz to grant her wish

Angela Merkel on Wednesday, December 8, congratulated her successor Olaf Scholz on the election as head of the German government, and also asked her to fulfill one of her wishes. The meeting is broadcast on the website of the German parliament.

“Since I am not a member of the Bundestag, I still could not personally congratulate Olaf Scholz. Therefore, I want to make up for it: I heartily congratulate, dear Mr. Chancellor, dear Olaf Scholz, ”said Merkel.

At the same time, the ex-head of the FRG government asked Scholz “to take over the department and work for the good of the country.” Merkel stressed that this is her only desire.

Scholz was elected the new chancellor of Germany following a vote in the Bundestag earlier that day. 395 deputies voted for the politician.

Also on Wednesday, acting Oleg Krasnitsky, Director of the Third European Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, expressed the hope that relations between the Russian Federation and the new Cabinet of Ministers of the Federal Republic of Germany would be built in conditions of mutual benefit and trust. He added that the Russian authorities look forward to organizing contacts with the new German government in the near future.

Parliamentary elections in Germany took place on 26 September. Merkel did not run for office.
