According to the police, the trigger for the collision on the western motorway was probably a technical defect: a 27-year-old from the Linz-Land district, who was traveling in the second lane towards Vienna at around 6:15 a.m., suddenly lost speed. However, because several trucks overtook him in the first lane, he was unable to drive onto the hard shoulder. A 25-year-old following behind was no longer able to brake in time and drove into the man in front of him. The two cars skidded and finally came to a stop on the hard shoulder.
The 25-year-old Romanian sustained serious injuries in the accident, while the 27-year-old escaped with minor injuries. The drivers were taken to Med Campus III and the Linz UKH. The first and second lanes had to be closed for the duration of the clean-up work. A backlog of several kilometers long formed. The cars, which were no longer drivable, were removed from the scene of the accident by the towing service. The Rohrbach and St. Florian fire departments were called in to carry out the clean-up and cleaning work.
