After the REWE Group announced last week that it would close the Billa branch on Lonstorferplatz, FPÖ local councilor Zeljko Malesevic is calling for local supplies to be secured in the Franckviertel. “Because there are a lot of older people living here, short distances for daily errands are particularly important,” says Malesevic. Specifically, he suggests that the owner pro mente Upper Austria set up a social market for needy Franckviertlers.
Failed rescue attempt
REWE had already announced a closure in 2021, but at that time the supermarket was convinced to stay with a rent reduction and more parking spaces. But the frequency may have been too low.
However, this does not change REWE’s plans to open a branch in the newly built Wimhölzel Hinterland in 2029.
