The government suggests cooperation with Argentina to produce in agriculture

The vice minister of MGAP, Ignacio Buffa, encouraged the creation of a large southern pole of food production.

The government raised the opportunity that would exist between Argentina and Uruguay for the creation of a southern pole of food production at a regional, and even international, level, focused on the goal of cooperating and stopping competing for markets that they could cover together.

The undersecretary of Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP), Ignacio Buffaassured that, despite the asymmetries in the exchange rate between the two countries, it would be more profitable to view the region as a south pole of food production within the framework of cooperation between both countries.

“I understand the situation on the border – I am from Soriano – because of the asymmetries very strong that we have with Argentina, that come from the previous administration and that are difficult to sustain with government measures,” the leader noted in dialogue with the National Compromiso program, which is broadcast on the VTV channel.

In that sense, he assured that Uruguay and Argentina have to begin to see themselves “as a great south pole of food production of quality and quantity for the world.” With this, he stressed that “it is not good for Argentine agriculture to have problems” since both countries have “much more to gain by cooperating than by competing.”

Opening new markets

Meanwhile, the leader highlighted the opening of 33 new markets for him Uruguay At the same time, an improvement was perceived in “the quality of access to several of them, such as China.”

In relation to the Asian giant, Buffa recalled that Uruguay managed to place Tripe and sorghum, two highly demanded products in China. “It will generate more than 50 million dollars for the entire chain,” he said.

On the other hand, he assured that the government has an agenda to advance in negotiations with markets in the Southeast Asian and countries of Central America around products like rice meat and dairy.

In relation to fishing sector, Buffa admitted that “he was coming from a long process of deterioration” in relation to previous administrations. However, he established that they have been working to enhance it. “In fact, we managed to open the market for China for some species of fish,” explained the leader, who added that they are working on the implementation of financial tools for the fishing sector with the aim of converting their ships.
