3,500 meters long, in the steepest places with a maximum gradient of 60 percent: the World Cup route named after Hannes Trinkl in the Hinterstoder ski area is only reserved for experienced skiers. For a 48-year-old skier, a descent on the route, which opened in 2016, ended in the hospital on Monday afternoon.
The man had almost completed the descent, also known as the “Streif der Oberösterreicher”, when he fell due to a driving error in the lowest section at the entrance to the Ziehweg to the valley station. He was thrown against the fencing net and then slipped under the net into a stream bed.
Climbed over a four meter high embankment
Despite serious injuries, the winter athlete managed to climb back onto the slope over the approximately four meter high and very steep embankment. There, following skiers noticed him and started the rescue chain. The 48-year-old was taken to the AKH in Linz by emergency helicopter, the police said on Monday evening.

It is not the first serious skiing accident in Upper Austria this season: During the Christmas holidays, a 37-year-old in the Hinterstoder ski area also had to be resuscitated after a serious fall on the icy slope. Mountain rescue was on duty in the Wurzeralm ski area just a few days ago after a snowboarder fell over a rock face while descending in open terrain.
