Carmelo Airport had record operations in the last year

The movement in the airport terminal met the expected projections since its modernization in December 2022.

He Carmelo International Airport (Cologne)also known as Zagarzazú Airport, had record operations for the movement of aircraft and passengers in the last year, meeting the expected projections since its modernization was carried out in December 2022.

After the reconditioning process carried out Uruguay Airports With the aim of transforming it into a strategic point for the region, the airport terminal experienced between January 2023 and this month, more than 1,900 aircraft movements and the arrival of almost 3,000 passengers.

In the month of April, the largest number of operations were recorded, coinciding with Tourism Week and the 1st Aeronautical Meeting organized by the company, called “AeroCarmelo 2023”.

On the other hand, the largest number of passengers came from or had as their destination the San Fernando Airportlocated in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Likewise, the Carmelo Airport received national passengers and passengers from other parts of the region.

These figures are unprecedented if we compare them, for example, to the statistics of 2020, when during the pandemic the airport received only 16 domestic flights and 36 passengers. By then, the equipment and technology had become almost obsolete due to financial constraints.

“The balance is really positive”

Federico CabreraManager of Operations and Experience at Aeropuertos Uruguay, assured that “the balance made in this first year of operations is really positive” and that, without a doubt, “this has a strong impact on more passengers choosing to visit this Colonia town and develop tourism in Uruguay“.

The Carmelo Airport was the first air terminal mobilized by Uruguay Airports within the framework of the development of the National System of International Airports (Sinai), it was later followed by the Rivera International Airportshared with Brazil and reopened in December 2023.
