At these temperatures only the hard core sits on the benches behind the tram stop near the Volksgarten. In the summer, this is the meeting place for addicts, much to the chagrin of some of the passers-by who feel uncomfortable there. A ban on alcohol hasn’t changed anything, now the place is to be redesigned and the clientele is to be better distributed throughout the park.
Timetable is fixed
On Monday, the timetable was fixed within the municipality. The benches at the tram stop will be removed as early as February and the strip will be landscaped as soon as the weather permits. New benches should be set up at the other end of the Volksgarten as soon as possible. Where exactly was worked out together with the target groups and will be revealed at a press conference in February. As reported, Volkshilfe employees have been traveling to the Volksgarten since the summer to talk to all user groups about their needs and possible improvements.

“The willingness to cooperate surprised us,” reports Volker Atteneder, division manager at Volkshilfe Oberösterreich. The new benches will be set up temporarily to see whether they will be accepted. There should also be a free toilet and a drinking water fountain nearby. “It is important to me that we improve the situation in the Volksgarten and that everyone gets behind it,” says city councilor Eva Schobesberger (Greens), who is responsible for urban green spaces.

Ultimately, these are just the first small measures to defuse the conflicts at the tram stop and offer the affected groups alternative options. A major redesign of the Volksgarten will then follow as part of the city center concept that is currently being developed and will be presented in autumn 2024.
