Prominent Tories resign in dispute over deportation law

On Tuesday evening, two Tory party deputy chief executives, Lee Anderson and Brendan Clarke-Smith, resigned from their positions. They were expected to vote against the government’s bill and wanted to avoid expulsion by resigning.

The third reading vote was expected on Wednesday evening. If at least 28 Tory MPs vote against Sunak’s draft, the project is likely to fail.

The law is intended to allow the conservative government to expel irregular migrants to Rwanda without examining their asylum applications and regardless of their origin. They should ask for asylum in the East African country, which is declared a safe third country under the law. A return to Great Britain is not possible. The law is also intended to prevent judicial review citing human rights in Great Britain. But that doesn’t go far enough for the right wing of the conservatives.

“Substantial rebellion”

On Tuesday evening, several changes to the draft were up for election. Dozens of Tory MPs supported the motion that appeals to international courts against ordered deportations to Rwanda should no longer be possible. The motion failed because the opposition voted with the government. However, commentators spoke of a significant rebellion.

Anderson and Clarke-Smith stressed in their joint resignation letter that Sunak’s bill was not enough to close all the loopholes. That is why they would support the amendments. Anderson in particular, who in addition to his mandate has a talk show on the right-wing TV station GB News, is popular with many conservative voters because of his outspoken nature.
