The importance of vaccines
Vaccines against Covid-19 saved at least 1.4 million lives in Europe, mostly adults, as reported today by the regional head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Hans Klugewho recalled that the virus is here “to stay.”
“Today, 1.4 million people in our (European) region – mostly elderly – can enjoy life with their loved ones because they have made the vital decision to get vaccinated against Covid-19″, Kluge said during a press conference today.
According to WHO data, as of December 19, 2023, more than 277.7 million cases of Covid-19 were reported in the region, which covers 53 countries and extends to Central Asia -including Russia and several former Soviet colonies – as well as more than 2.2 million deaths.
“As we learn to live with respiratory viruses, it is absolutely vital for vulnerable populations to stay up to date on their Covid and flu vaccinations,” the WHO representative considered.
