Hikers are no longer allowed to go on hunting trails: This is at least how the first draft of the new hunting law could have been interpreted. Because there, hunting trails, i.e. unmarked paths in the forest area, were counted as hunting facilities under paragraph 50.
As reported, the sixth paragraph finally said: “Hunting facilities may not be used by people who are not involved in hunting without the consent of those authorized to hunt.” Because it is not easy for hikers to see whether a path is an alpine path, a mountain path or a hunting path, the alpine clubs asked for this wording to be changed. This passage has now been deleted in the new draft. “Solutions were found that do not restrict access to the forest for recreational purposes,” says Mario Haas from Bad Goisern, SPÖ agriculture spokesman. He had also previously advocated that carrying cameras and binoculars should not be classified as “items that make it easier to catch and kill game”.
Haas welcomes the further development of hunting law with the creation of community hunting boards and the new professionalized arbitrators for game damage.
