Every day is different, depending on the delivery of parts, production can take place or not, reports Helmut Emler, works council at Steyr Automotive, the former MAN plant in Steyr.
The short-time working since September, which neo-owner Siegfried Wolf initially only wanted to run for one month, is now fixed until the end of February. Several hundred almost completely assembled trucks are on the factory premises – and in areas that have since been rented – and are waiting to be completed. With a theoretical daily production of 86 trucks, the plant is well utilized – if all parts are delivered on time.
In the meantime, the personnel exchange is running in the plant. Because – as reported – part of the workforce wants to take advantage of the social plan and leave the company. New employees would be taken on for this purpose.
There are a number of other job offers on the website. This has to do with the fact that in Steyr, due to the MAN group affiliation, business areas and functions that were previously not required are now being rebuilt, for example in purchasing or sales, according to the company’s management. The company announced that it currently has 1,800 permanent employees and 250 leasing workers.
Electric truck production starts
The further order situation will be determined by MAN and also by the Swedish electric truck start-up Volta, which plans to have its first trucks mass-produced by Steyr Automotive from the end of 2022. At the end of November it became known that the German logistics company DB Schenker wanted to buy 1,500 electric trucks, which should come from Volta.
At the beginning of next year, Steyr Automotive intends to manufacture the first electric-based parent vehicles for buses and small vans, which were developed by the Russian GAZ Group, and adapt them to European requirements. The conversion to the production of e-commercial vehicles from the end of 2022 is “fully on schedule”, said a company spokeswoman.
