The president of the Construction Chamber of Uruguay and company director Saceem, Alejandro Ruibal, warned about theft optical fibre wires that are being carried out in the Central Railway, which could complicate the key work for national and international production and trade.

“There is a very serious problem with thefts, it is being vandalized; they steal fiber optic cables that are of no use to them, but they cut them and steal them,” said the businessman in a press conference on Tuesday. Consequently, the criminal acts are generating “some problems with the signaling” of the Railway which, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP)will begin operating in April.

For Ruibal, these events are serious beyond the theft itself—of cables that “are useless” because “there is very little copper” in fiber optics”—but because of the problems they can cause. In that sense, he pointed out that the current situation is generating “some problems” in the signaling. “You have to understand that now a real railway“You can’t go around doing that kind of damage because if there is an accident it won’t be a small train going 40 kilometers per hour,” he said.

Although it was not mentioned that the thefts, which occurred in Montevideo, Canelones and Peach, are going to generate greater delays than those already experienced by the important infrastructure work carried out by the government, the president of the Construction Chamber highlighted the danger they may entail.

Given this situation, he indicated that they are analyzing putting more guards and the Minister of the Interior, Nicolas Martinelli, is looking for “some alternative” that may involve an agreement with the Ministry of Defence. “You have to be very careful and raise people’s awareness. One cannot allow an infrastructure on which the community relies to be vandalized. country economy“he concluded.

A key work that reaches its final stage

The thefts of fiber optic cables arise while the important work begins to go through its final stage, with the aim that the Central Railway It will begin operating in April, to be fully operational by the end of the first half of the year.

The work was originally planned to be a year ahead of current schedule, but different bureaucratic issues and organizational disagreements delayed the start-up of the wagons. Finally, in November one of the fundamental sectors for the operation of the train was inaugurated: the operations and maintenance center that will support the service.

This work is key for the Executive Branch and for the country, since it will unite the second pulp processing plant UPM in the country, located in Bull Passwith the Port of Montevideo. With a circulation speed of 80 kilometers per hour outside the city limits – in a total section of 273 kilometers – the Central Railway will transport, in a first stage, 2 million tons of pulp per year to the terminals of export more efficiently—and vice versa, with respect to the inputs necessary for production.

In this way, it is intended to be a permanent engine for the economy and the labor market of the country, around a product that is growing more and more important within the balance of trade Uruguayan.
