Her son’s presence of mind likely saved the family’s life. The 17-year-old noticed a fire that broke out in the attic of the apartment building on Tuesday after midnight, woke his family and called the fire department.
When the emergency services arrived, the roof structure was in full fire, while everyone in the house – the parents, two children and grandmother – had already gotten to safety. 110 firefighters managed to limit the fire to the attic and prevent the flames from spreading to neighboring buildings, despite freezing temperatures that quickly froze the extinguishing water.
The house, which is currently uninhabitable, will need to be repaired. In the meantime, the family came to live with relatives. Investigators at least ruled out arson.
