The interim mayor of Canelones, Marcelo Metedieraassured that the department views the construction of the Fast Track that would unite the Canarian department with Montevideo although they highlighted that there are environmental problems since the highway would go through two basins and one of them provides drinking water to Gold Coast.

The Canarian leader assured that the problems have to do with the territorial planning since the construction would pass through two water basins. Although one of them is not protected and there would be no problem in building nearby, while the other has a different situation.

According to Matedeira, the fast track would affect the basin Swan Lagoon which provides drinking water to 33 thousand homes on the Gold Coast, which would force the project to take a different direction.

The mayor assured radio Monte Carlo that December 20 was the last meeting with the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP) and there they discussed, together with the watershed commission and a neighborhood commission, and the possibility of a modification was determined. Meanwhile, the neighbors expressed their support for the construction of the expressway since it would contaminate Laguna del Cisne.

The keys to the highway

The leader of the MTOP, José Luis Falero, provided the keys to the expressway that would link Montevideo with Canelones in mid-October and announced that the highway will begin two or three kilometers from the Airport going to Pando and would end on route 8, near route 11 and there will be a total 23 kilometers. According to the minister, “it is the most convenient route” to develop. According to his instructions, the beginning of the highway would be on Route 101, close to Nicolich Colony.

The leader announced that the land around the future highway will have to, expropriated for the most part, although he clarified that “they sought registration limits so that no one in particular would be affected.” Once that stage is finished, the portfolio intends to publicly present the layout and determine financing. Regarding the permitted speed, the minister announced that the maximum speed that is currently set at 110 kilometers per hour will be raised.

On the other hand, the work would start next year and would have a duration of 18 months total. Regarding the differences between a route and this highway, the minister explained that it will have “a point of origin and a point of arrival, without interference.” “It will be a two-way street with a New Jersey barrier in the middle (concrete safety barrier). With barrier for returns in case of accidents. It will be for light vehicles and thus lighten the Interbalnearia,” he assured.
