Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday in Islamabad that several military strikes had been carried out against terrorist hideouts in the province of Sistan and Balochistan. “Several terrorists were killed.” The strikes served Pakistan’s national interest. The sovereignty and territorial integrity of the “brother country” Iran are respected.

A Pakistani intelligence official had previously spoken of attacks against “anti-Pakistani militant groups” in the neighboring country. Iranian state media reported explosions around the city of Saravan in the southeast of the country, which is close to the border with Pakistan. Three women and four children, all non-Iranians, were killed.

Children killed in air raid

Pakistan accused Iran on Wednesday of killing two children in an airstrike on its territory. In response to the attack on the troubled Balochistan province, the government in Islamabad recalled its ambassador to Tehran and promised a response. Iran spoke of an attack against the Sunni jihadist group Jaish al-Adl that was not directed against Pakistanis. Tehran said the militant bases were linked to Israel.

After Thursday’s airstrikes, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry emphasized that it would continue to “take all necessary steps for the security of its own people.” Efforts will also be made to “find common solutions with Iran in the fight against terrorism.”

Jaish al-Adl classified as a terrorist organization

The Sunni group Jaish al-Adl was founded in 2012 by former members of a radical Sunni movement. In recent years, the group has carried out several attacks in Iran, where it is classified as a terrorist organization. In December, the group claimed responsibility for an attack that left eleven dead on the police headquarters in the city of Rask in southeastern Iran.
