Conservationists from the Invasive Species Council are warning of a plague of insects in the states of Queensland and New South Wales. “The heavy rains of the last few days and the stormy weather in the region are promoting the spread of fire ants, one of the worst invasive species,” said a statement reported by the “Bild” newspaper.
“Fire ants are more active before and after rainfall and can form large rafts on the water during floods to move into new areas,” the experts warned the population. Six nests were discovered and destroyed in the town of South Murwillumbah alone. It is about 30 kilometers from the jungle camp – a stone’s throw by Australian standards. Originally from South America, fire ants (Solenopsis) were first introduced to the USA. The small but very aggressive animals that eat a variety of other insects spread rapidly there from around the 1930s. The animals are particularly dangerous for insects, but they also attack people. Then they first bite and then inject secretions from their poisonous stinger into the wound, often several times in a row. The secretion contains substances that cause a burning skin reaction. An RTL spokesman told “Bild”: “Our nature experts are closely monitoring whether fire ants have settled in the camp area.
